Shaw

Serving as a hub of African American history, Shaw is a trendy DC neighborhood with a rich backstory. Shaw is located in the popular northwest quadrant of The District near Logan Circle and Chinatown and just east of U Street Corridor. This hip neighborhood is home to the famous Howard Theatre that opened in 1910 and has hosted greats like Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Louis Armstrong. Nearby attractions like Lincoln Theatre and 9:30 Club draw music and art lovers from all across DC and beyond to Shaw. Many students live in this area, as Howard University is located at the neighborhood’s edge.

Besides its lively arts scene, Shaw also offers unparalleled shopping, bars, and dining to its residents. Popular restaurants line 7th and 9th Streets and Shaw’s historic alleyways. The southern part of the neighborhood yields to DC’s City Center and Penn Quarter, so there is never a shortage of things to do. Being such a central area of DC, Shaw is highly commutable, featuring two metro stops along the green and yellow lines and numerous bus routes. Due to expansion and renovation in the area, Shaw homes can either be pre-war rowhouses or new condos. Sources: washington.org, Long and Foster, Compass
